The American Indian Woman Scholar serves as an ambassador and represents the American Indian student population at the University of Utah at various functions and gatherings throughout the academic year. This includes conferences, workshops, powwows, tribal ceremonies, celebrations, parades, school visitations, special appearances, various socials, and a variety of University of Utah affiliated events.  The American Indian Scholar also serves as a role model and mentor for peers and fellow colleagues.  If you are interested in participating, applications are due Tuesday, April 5, 2011 by 5:00 pm.  Please contact itsa.uofu@gmail.com for more information.  Otherwise, if you are interested in attending this event please RSVP to itsa.uofu@gmail.com.      

 
 
Charlene Teters, (Spokane), is a professor at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico recognized for her activism and art.  As a founding Board Member of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and the Media, her activist-career began with a vigorous dispute with the University of Illinois over their use of a stereotyped image of an American Indian for the school’s sports mascot.  She picketed sports events and launched a national debate about the appropriateness of this practice by sports and media.
